I didn’t do a Countdown to Spring series last year, probably because my Project 365 pretty much eclipsed everything else. For those of you who are relatively new to the blog, during Countdown to Spring, I highlight a different Colorado wildflower every day for a couple of weeks before the official “First Day of Spring,” which is on March 20 this year.
For the first installment of Countdown to Spring 2014, let’s have a look at Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium).
I don’t know how such lovely flowers get branded with the term “weed.” In the UK, this flower is known as Rosebay Willowherb. I think that’s a lot prettier. The name Fireweed comes from this plant’s habit of colonizing on burnt areas after forest fires.
Many parts of the fireweed plant are edible and they are rich in beta-carotene, as well as vitamins A and C.
