Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of my wonderful blog readers!!

How are those photos coming along for the HOLIDAYS photography assignment? Just a quick reminder and recap – any holiday-related photo taken during the month of December, 2011 is eligible for the assignment. Email up to SEVEN of your favorite holiday photos to me at 39DegN@gmail.com no later than January 1 and the results will be posted in the blog on January 3.

Your challenge is to BE CREATIVE with your holiday photography, but most of all, HAVE FUN!

Are you ready for another photography assignment? Let’s do HOLIDAYS again. Whatever holiday or holidays you happen to celebrate this month, that’s what this assignment is about.

There are just two rules for the assignment:

  1. Any holiday photo taken during the month of December, 2011 is eligible for the assignment. The idea is to take your camera out with the theme in mind and come up with the most interesting, creative HOLIDAY shots that you can.
  2. Each photo you submit must be related to a December holiday of your choice in some prominent way.

That’s it. If you’re in, start taking your HOLIDAY images now. Sometime between now and Sunday evening, January 1, 2012, email up to SEVEN of your favorites to me at 39DegN@gmail.com and put the word “HOLIDAY” in the subject line. Please send your photos to me as large as possible and feel free to include captions if you wish. The results will be posted in the blog on Tuesday, January 3.

As always with these photography assignments, please keep in mind that you don’t need a fancy schmancy camera to play along. DSLR, point-and-shoot, camera phone… it doesn’t matter. These photography assignments are just for fun and to help you become a better photographer by training your eye to see specific things or by practicing certain techniques. There’s no critique involved, no judges, no winners, no prizes… just HOLIDAY photos with whatever camera you have available.

Again, your challenge is to BE CREATIVE with your holiday photography, but most of all, HAVE FUN!

The Fall/Autumn photography assignment photos are in… check ‘em out!

My readers reported that this was a tough assignment, since fall happens at different times and in varying degrees in different places, or not at all for some! Kudos to the participants who did a great job of finding creative ways of capturing the spirit of fall/autumn in their respective parts of the world!

As always, thumbnails for a few of the submitted photos can be found below. You can view a larger version of each photo by clicking on its thumbnail. Since I’ve sort of been on a blog hiatus for a bit, I think it’s about time to get back into the game with another photography assignment. I’ve decided to honor the first day of fall (today) by making FALL/AUTUMN the topic of the next assignment.

During my recent Alphabet Assignment series, I changed the assignment rules up a little bit, but now we’re going back to the OLD rules, particularly the one that says your photos have to be NEW. But I am going to give you TWO WEEKENDS to complete this assignment, so that should make things a little easier, plus I’m going to allow participants to submit up to TEN photos.

So, the rules, which are quite simple:

  1. As mentioned, your photos have to be NEW, as in taken between now and SUNDAY evening, October 2 – NOT something you took last year, last week or even yesterday for that matter. New. Fresh. Now. No digging old photos out of your hard drive, ya hear? The idea is to take your camera out with the theme in mind and come up with the most interesting fall/autumn shots you can.
  2. The photos you submit must feature something about fall/autumn in some prominent way.

That’s it. If you’re in, start taking your FALL/AUTUMN pics now. Use your imagination. Fall foliage is good, but try to get a variety of photos that depict FALL/AUTUMN.

Sometime between now and Sunday evening, October 2, email up to TEN of your favorites to me at 39DegN@gmail.com and put the word “FALL” or “AUTUMN” in the subject line. Please send your photos to me as large as possible and if I don’t already know your name, be sure to include it so I can give you credit. Feel free to include captions if you wish, but they are not required as they were with the Alphabet Assignments. The results of this assignment will be posted in the blog on Tuesday, October 4.

As always with these assignments, please keep in mind that you don’t need a fancy schmancy camera to play along. DSLR, point-and-shoot, camera phone… it doesn’t matter. My photography assignments are just for fun and to help you become a better photographer by training your eye to see specific things or by practicing certain techniques. There’s no critique involved, no judges, no winners, no prizes… just photos of FALL/AUTUMN with whatever camera you have available.

OK, let’s get busy with those fall/autumn photos!

We’ve finally arrived at the last week of the Alphabet Assignment series. As I mentioned previously, I’m going to combine the letters X, Y and Z into this final week to make things a tad easier for everyone. Your assignment this week is to take and submit images that represent the letter X, Y and/or Z in some way. I would PREFER that the photos you submit be taken during this week, but that’s not a rule as it has been with past photography assignments. Please note that you may submit up to FIFTEEN photos for this grande finale assignment.

The challenge is to be CREATIVE in your photography and in selecting your subjects. Try to be creative and/or clever about photographing even the most ordinary of subjects and remember to use good photography composition techniques. This isn’t JUST about participating in an assignment, it’s about improving your photography.

If it might not be clear to the average person just HOW your photo represents the letters X, Y and/or Z, please provide a caption. Better yet, include a caption regardless. Bonus (but imaginary) style points will be awarded for alliterative captions, as I am a sucker for alliteration. Also, if you submit photos of identifiable people, please make sure that they know what’s up and that they are ok with having their photo posted on the blog.

Your XYZ photos are due by Sunday evening, September 4 and the results will be posted in the blog on Tuesday, September 6. Email your photos to me at 39DegN@gmail.com and please limit your submissions to 15 (FIFTEEN!!!) photos.

As always with my assignments, please keep in mind that you don’t need a fancy schmancy camera to play along. DSLR, point-and-shoot, camera phone… it doesn’t matter – these photography assignments are just for fun and to help you become a better photographer by training your eye to see specific things or by practicing certain techniques. There’s no critique involved, no judges, no winners, no prizes… just photos related to the topic of the week taken with whatever camera you have available. As photographer Chase Jarvis has pointed out, “The best camera is the one you have with you.”

OK, now get busy with those XYZ photos!

First, a heads up… since we’re coming up on the really, REALLY hard part of the alphabet, I’ve decided to combine the really hard letters into a single week. Therefore, NEXT week will be XYZ week and you’ll be allowed to submit up to FIFTEEN photos. Just thought I’d give you a little advanced warning.

OK, now for W. Your assignment this week is to take and submit images that represent the letter W in some way. I would PREFER that the photos you submit be taken during this week, but that’s not a rule as it has been with past photography assignments.

The challenge is to be CREATIVE in your photography and in selecting your subjects. Try to be creative and/or clever about photographing even the most ordinary of subjects and remember to use good photography composition techniques. This isn’t JUST about participating in an assignment, it’s about improving your photography.

If it might not be clear to the average person just HOW your photo represents the letter W, please provide a caption. Better yet, include a caption regardless. Bonus (but imaginary) style points will be awarded for alliterative captions, as I am a sucker for alliteration. Also, if you submit photos of identifiable people, please make sure that they know what’s up and that they are ok with having their photo posted on the blog.

Your W photos are due by Sunday evening, August 28 and the results will be posted in the blog on Tuesday, August 30. Email your photos to me at 39DegN@gmail.com and please limit your submissions to 7 (SEVEN) photos.

OK, now get busy with those W photos!
